A High Tech Solution For High Tech Research

Kalwall Panels Provide Security and Protection for Fermilab SBND Building

Research surrounding neutrino particles is done under a cloak of security at the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino Program in Batavia, Ill. Kalwall® translucent sandwich panels are a key component of that cloak.

The new Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is one of the buildings where scientists continue to study ways neutrinos can be used to probe environments that other radiation (such as light or radio waves) cannot penetrate.

The lab, which is encased by Kalwall panels, comes under the auspice of the United States Department of Energy. Kalwall panels, which meet the U.S. Department of Defense’s Anti-Terrorism Force Protection requirements, are commonly used in government facilities where privacy is required.

In addition to providing privacy, the panels also provide glare-free diffuse natural daylighting, which has proven to enhance environments such as research and educational facilities.
