Daylit Excellence: Foyles Arena opens to the public
Foyles Arena, the new £12.7m sports centre at St Columb’s Park in Derry, Northern Ireland, was officially opened mid-April.
The main features of the design by Samuel Stevenson & Sons include a 36m Main Arena Hall, which is so large that the entire old St Columb’s Leisure Centre complex could fit inside it. With the capacity to seat 2,000 people, the venue is now the largest indoor facility in the region.
This project in Derry delivers elite facilities for Judo, Wrestling and Mountaineering together with the provision of the community learner and 25m pool. Externally, 5-a-side and full sized football pitches are available.
After several successful designs involving Kalwall® translucent walling (including the widely publicized Diamond Hall at the University of Ulster’s campus in Coleraine), it was a natural choice for Samuel Stevenson & Sons to use this highly insulating translucent panel system to admit controlled daylight to the hall and pool areas. The hall now benefits from evenly diffused daylight, preventing glare and shadows. Kalwall® also prevents glare on the surface water in the swimming pool area, and this is an important feature for the lifeguards at the facility, allowing them to be aware of any mishaps both above and below water.
Structura UK Ltd. worked under the main contractor O’Hare & McGovern Ltd. to install the Kalwall® translucent walls. We are happy with an effective and smooth install and a stunning result.
