The Millennium Court at The Burroughs Club, Middlesex University, Hendon, London, England, was designed by architect Pringle Richards Sharratt. Daylighting is a key ingredient to the facility's immediate acclaim. The Millennium Court breaks the mold of old-style, windowless, "black box" indoor sports complexes. Highly insulating, diffuse-light transmitting Kalwall panels bring outside light indoors, creating museum-quality, balanced daylight free from glare, hot spots and shadows. There is no need for blinds, shades or curtains, because Kalwall eliminates sharp contrasts -- crucial for tennis or other sporting activities.
THE WORLD CHAMPION OF DAYLIGHTING
The Real Tennis World Championship Doubles staged their inaugural competition at one of the world's finest indoor courts. . . and Kalwall was there. Not to compete on the court, but to provide excellent live action viewing by means of glare-free diffuse daylighting. "Real Tennis" is the closest form of the original game of tennis as it was played in medieval times.
The unique composite design of Kalwall also reduces solar heat gain and controls HVAC costs. As a result, this tennis facility is sensitive to the environment by using less energy. Aesthetically, Kalwall is a key design element in creating a dramatic effect as futuristic as The Millennium Court's name. Viewed from the inside, the building's lines are clean and sleek; outside, after dark, the structure gives off a thrilling glow.
