STRUCTURES UNLIMITED PROVIDES NATURAL DOME DAYLIGHTING

Translucent Daylighting Panels The primary objective in the renovation of Bloomfield, Connecticut's 45-year old Laurel Elementary School was to comfortably accommodate the 444 students Grades K-2, and provide the school with a recognizable entrance. The design team from The Lawrence Associates, Architects/Planners met the challenge by specifying a translucent dome rotunda as the centerpiece of the design, provided by Structures Unlimited. The new rotunda entrance gives the entire school front a new 21st century design. In addition, a new row of skylights bathes the connecting corridors with natural daylighting, enhancing the journey from classrooms to core spaces. "Learning can take place in the entire building when spaces are designed creatively to capture students imaginations." Anwar Hossain, AIA, Principal-in-Charge/Design Architect also shows his creative side by acting as photographer extraordinaire.

KALWALL MAKES FOR A MORE COMFORTABLE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Translucent Daylighting Panels We love this story! Customer testimonials are the best proof of how Kalwall can radically upgrade your building's energy efficiency with the best daylighting quality!

"The biggest impact in this remodel was the new Kalwall Translucent Panel Window Units. During construction it was noted that the temperature difference was 10 degrees from an existing classroom to one adjacent with the new Kalwall Panels. The old steel windows were drafty, cold and inefficient. The teachers and students love the new learning space and the warm natural light provided by the Kalwall. The students are no longer distracted by harsh glare and cold breeze and are concentrating on learning.

The community loves it! The school looks new with the replacement of the windows.

The students don't need to wear coats in class or move when sitting near the windows, during the last storm that blew through the students commented that they can't feel the wind anymore. Thank you Kilgore TEC Products for replacing our old windows with Kalwall." said Shauna Schmerer, Superintendent and Dewey White, Director of Transportation & Maintenance

GEORGIA TECH AND KALWALL® HIGHLIGHTED BY NZB (NET ZERO BUILDINGS MAGAZINE)

Translucent Daylighting Panels The Carbon-Neutral Energy Solutions (C-NES) Laboratory at Georgia Institute of Technology incorporates a three-tiered lighting strategy utilizing daylighting, ambient lighting and task lighting. The design focused on maximizing daylight in order to minimize the demand for artificial lighting. For example, by design, no artificial light will be required in the high-bay lab space during daylight hours.

The idea was to keep the lights turned off as much as possible during the day. The building, which is 120-ft. wide, uses the north-facing high-bay, with its 30-ft. high translucent Kalwall® and glass façade, as a daylit atrium to cut the apparent width of the building in half. The daylight from the atrium provides northern light to the mid-bay and computational labs.

Fenestration along the upper and lower high-bay northern façade, along with translucent panels between, provide light deep into the facility. Incorporated into the southern façade is a crystalline photovoltaic screen wall that carries down the façade to a horizontal canopy, which is also clad with crystalline photovoltaic panels. Crystalline photovoltaic panels are located on the roof and nearby on the site.

"...[the] translucent panel façade, along with clerestory fenestration, also brings light into the north edge of the bay, computational labs and office spaces," adds Daniel B. Rew, AIA, LEED® AP, vice president, design principal, HDR Architecture, Princeton, New Jersey.

With over 6,000 square feet of existing window demolition and Kalwall replacement systems at the three facilities, the demanding summer schedule aced the test with an on-time, on-budget and injury-free installation. BEFORE: gloomy, cold classrooms that controlled harsh glare with pull down shades... AFTER: inspiring, warm atmosphere of glare-free daylight. No more shades and cold glass!

KALWALL WINDOWS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

S Bend Airport The high-profile building projects at Flagstaff schools are complete, and now the district is focusing its attention toward the little things that could make a big difference. According to the Arizona Daily Sun, "The new Kalwall windows in some classrooms allow a soft glow. The opaque white Kalwall panes are fiberglass, sandwiching a row of clear, double-paned glass. They insulate so well [in January] that the south-facing rooms with the new windows can be up to 15 degrees warmer than the rooms across the hall, which still have single-pane glass."

METRO-NORTH'S NEWEST MAINTENANCE SHOP FEATURING KALWALL HIGH-PERFORMANCE TRANSLUCENT SYSTEMS
WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE

New York State's Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Croton-Harmon Locomotive and Coach Shop was designed for employee safety and comfort, as well as energy and operational efficiency. Now it has been recognized as the best in the world, as the facility was honored by the Brunel Awards Jury in the competition hosted by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and the International Union of Railways (UIC), which jointly announced the winners from 11 nations that have been recognized for design excellence in the 2011 Edition of the Brunel Awards International Railway Design Competition. A modern, translucent wall panel system gives the main shop the aesthetic look of a high-end office complex rather than an industrial complex. The Kalwall translucent system lets in natural daylight, allowing shop lights to dim automatically to save electricity. "Energy efficient roofing with skylights also allows the building to use 20% less energy than similar buildings." The Brunel Awards were created in 1985 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of England's Great Western Railway designed by the renowned British architect and engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Subsequently, the competition has been held at three-year intervals rotating among the Watford Group member nations. The last time it was held in the U.S. was 1994. Visit MTA for more details.

KALWALL HELPS TURN MOTHBALLED POWER PLANT INTO A GREEN SCHOOL

Skylight Daylighting System Sears Roebuck and Company vacated their Chicago campus in the early 1990s. The current owner, the Homan Arthington Foundation, partnered with architectural firm Farr Associates in transforming the mothballed powerhouse into the Charles H. Shaw Technology and Learning Center: Henry Ford Academy Power House High – a green charter school. According to Architect magazine, "Architects chose to replace the aging glass panels in the ribbon of skylight of the great hall with translucent panels from Kalwall. These panels have a 50% light transmission, which reduces glare and heat gain into the space while also refracting the light to better diffuse through the entire double-height room. The panels also improve the U-value and efficiency of the skylight significantly over the original single-pane glass." Farr submitted enough credits to achieve LEED® Platinum, and the final rating will be handed down in the coming months. The school received the 2009 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Project of the Year, and Midwest Construction named it the K-12 Education Project of the Year. Builder Pepper Construction received an Aon Build Amercia Award, an annual ranking of the nation's most significant construction projects. KALWALL+ NANOGEL LIGHTS UP THE ARMY

Kalwall+ Nanogel Wall System "...The new Greenlief Armed Forces Reserve Center in Hastings, Nebraska, has been designed and built to take advantage of all the latest developments in daylighting and energy-saving technology. Architects RDG Planning & Design were asked to draft a modern facility with as much natural daylight as possible. They designed the building to include extensive areas of glazing for the assembly, main corridors and repair centers. However, although this would let in plenty of light, it would also let in unwanted glare and heat from solar gain. There was also the problem of insulation and energy saving in temperatures which ranged from -30°F in winter to over 100°F in summer. To help solve this problem, RDG turned to the daylighting experts at the Kalwall Corporation..." Get the whole story.

MARTHA STEWART FEATURES “GREEN” SKI CHALET AND KALWALL+ NANOGEL®

In building their new ski chalet in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, “minimizing their impact on the environment by using sustainable building materials and energy-saving features was a priority.” Architect Holly Ross and the homeowners tried to take advantage of the sun as much as possible. As Martha Stewart recounted in her televised feature, “They wanted lots of natural light to flood through their 3-level house. But big windows often result in big heat losses. So instead of using conventional glass for the large windows above the living area, they opted for a cutting-edge product called Kalwall. A translucent gel held inside sheets of fiberglass in an aluminum frame, it allows the light in while keeping the cold out.” The Kalwall+ Nanogel clearstory, stretching from one end of the house to the other, was a success. As the homeowner describes, “It's almost like a wall, but it allows light to come in so we don't have to turn the lights on most days.”
